Words may be divided into parts: the root word and an affix. You need to know whether the affix is:
(added at the end of a word): able; -ism; -ly; -ness.
More than one affix may be added to a root word. In the examples which follow, the word friend is the root word.
If you understand common affixes like these ones, you will find it easier to work out the meaning of new words without the use of a dictionary.
You will learn to build up the meaning of whole words from the meaning of the parts.
