What is a school?
A school is a place designed to provide learning space and learning environment for teaching of pupils /students.
Where is the word school driven from?
It was driven from a Greek word " schole" meaning "leisure" or a place where children always gather to be taught or learn or be given education.
- Learning takes place under the instruction of a teacher.
- Text books and other learning materials are also used.
- Learning takes place in a classroom.

History of the school
In kenya schools were introduced by Christian missionaries, who came to spread Christianity in eastern Africa. The missionaries came from Europe.
The first mission school was built at Rabai near Mombasa by a German missionary John Ludwig Krapf, in 1946. The schools were built to teach 3Rs;
- Reading
- Writing
- Arithmetic
This was to help African children read the bible, write and do simple arthmetics. They were known as Bush schools, as they were simply made of sticks, clay and grass.

Functions of a school
Equip learners with knowledge and skills.
Develop learners important social skills e.g communication skills.
A school is a tool that help us prepare learners for future life.
