Common Multiples

When two numbers are multiplied together, they give a multiple

for example,

9 x 4 = 36 and 36 ÷ 4 = 9 or 36 ÷ 9 = 4

Therefore the number 36 is divisible by 4 and 9.

We then say that 36 is a multiple of 4 and also a multiple of 9.

 

Example 1

What are the multiples of 4?

Solution

(1 x 4), (2 x 4), (3 x 4), (4 x 4), (5 x 4),

(6 x 4), (7 x 4), (8 x 4), (9 x 4), (10 x 4),

etc.

Which give: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, etc.

Multiples that are common to two or more numbers are said to be common multiples.

E.g. Multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, …
       Multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, …

So, common multiples of 2 and 3 are 6, 12, 18, …

 

Find the common multiples of 4 and 6.

Solution:

Multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, …
Multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, …

So, the common multiples of 4 and 6 are 12, 24, 36, …
