Profit & loss

If the selling price of a product is more than the buying price then the difference is the PROFIT.

If the buying price of a product is more than the selling price then the difference is the LOSS.

Example 1

Omwoyo bought 5 oranges each at Sh 5.

Two of them got spoilt and he later sold the remaining at Sh 9 each.

What profit did he make?

Solution

Buying price

 = sh (5 X 5) = Sh 25

Selling price

= sh (5 – 2) X 9 = Sh 27

Profit = selling price – buying price

= Sh (27 – 25) = Sh 2

Once the profit has been determined, the percentage profit can be calculated as follows:

(Profit/Buying Price) X 100

Remember:

The percentage profit for Omwoyo is therefore:

Percentage profit = (Profit/Buying Price) X 100

 = (2/25 X 100) %

 = 8%

Example 2

By selling a trouser for Sh 360 a trader gets a loss of 20%.

What is the buying price?

Solution

 Selling price = Sh 360

 Percentage loss = 20%

 Buying price = 100%

 Selling price = 80%

 80% = sh 360

 100% = (100 X 360)/80 = Sh 450

Example 3

Elisa bought 30 litres of milk for Sh 400.

She later sold the milk at Sh 12 per litre.

Work out her percentage profit or loss.

Remember that:

Solution

Buying price = Sh 400

Selling price = Sh (30 X 12) = Sh 360

Since the buying price is more than the selling price, a loss was made.

Loss = Sh 400 – Sh 360 = Sh 40

Percentage loss was therefore:

= (110/400)% = 27.5%
